This particular province offers a range of experiences – from hiking through the spectacular Drakensberg Mountains to learning about the Anglo-Boer and Anglo-Zulu battles. There are also a range of national parks and private game reserves in KwaZulu-Natal for those wishing to add a safari element to their trip. Other popular activities include surfing, hiking, sightseeing, fishing, and much more.

Durban

With its beautiful beaches, lively wining and dining scene, and rich cultural heritage, Durban is South Africa’s third-largest city and KwaZulu Natal’s tourist hub. Swimming and surfing are rated the best of any major city across the world and because of the sub-tropical climate the water is warm all year round.

Known as the Golden Mile, this stretch of beaches and amusement parks is Durban’s major attraction. Visitors can look forward to an array of wonderful activities including strolling along the beachfront promenade, visiting the Durban Botanical Gardens and exploring the many Asian and Indian markets.

Battlefields

KwaZulu Natal is steeped in history and littered with battlefields from the struggles of the Zulu Civil Wars, to their clashes with the Boers and the British. This picturesque area features sweeping views of rolling hills scattered with rugged rock formations. The most well-known and well-visited sites are those of the legendary Battles of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift.

Take an afternoon tour of the Isandlwana battlefield where the Zulus scored one of his most famous victories, then tour Rorke’s Drift battlefield the next morning. Tours take about three hours and are guided by passionate local historians who roll back the centuries with vivid storytelling and expert knowledge.

Drakensberg

Drakensberg Park is a World Heritage Site that forms the dramatic mountain border between South Africa and the kingdom of Lesotho. The Park can be roughly broken into three areas - the South, Central and Northern Drakensberg. The Central Drakensberg has some of the most impressive valleys and hikes, including Giants Castle and the Champagne Valley.

Book at least one activity per day in the Drakensberg – the mountains are a paradise for the active, who are spoilt with a mix of hiking trails, zip-lining, horse-back safaris, canoeing, white water rafting and abseiling, whilst the more relaxed adventurer can enjoy fishing, golf, birding or an easier walk through the mountains.
