Gran Canaria, located in the Atlantic Ocean, 130 miles off the northwest coast of Africa, is the third largest of the Canary Islands and has Fuerteventura and Tenerife as its neighbours. Las Palmas, in the north-east of the island, is its capital and is the most dynamic capital city in the Canaries.

There are several theories regarding the origins of Gran Canaria’s early inhabitants. A widely accepted theory is that Gran Canaria’s natives, generally known as Guanches, although Canarios is actually the correct historical term, originally came from North Africa and that they were descendants of the Berber people. In the 14th century, the Italians, Portuguese and Catalans sent their ships to the islands to bring back slaves and furs and, at the beginning of the 15th century, the rapid process of the conquest of the islands began.

Gran Canaria, is one of the last remaining European paradise isles with incredibly beautiful coastlines and spectacular beaches.  A mini continent in its own right, it offers lush forests, exotic fauna and flora, Sahara-like dunes, mountains, volcanic craters and even the odd flurry of snow on the highest peaks.  An island of contrasts with a great mix of people and local traditions, it is crammed with culture and sandy beaches.

The south is the most popular containing such delights as Puerto de Mogán (a picturesque village also known as Little Venice), Puerto Rico, Maspalomas, Meloneras, San Agustín and the famous Playa del Inglés.  In contrast, with their spectacular views and landscapes, make sure you don’t miss the rugged north and west coasts, as well as the island’s interior.

Enjoying a sunny climate, Gran Canaria is a great year-round destination.  From the cooler north to the sunnier south, this perfect holiday island has everything the most discerning traveller could wish for.

The Gulf Stream and Gran Canaria’s geography have blessed this island with a wonderfully mild climate year-round, making it a great holiday destination and just a step away from mainland Europe.

Average temperatures are consistent throughout the seasons ranging from 26°C and 28°C (79 - 82°F) in summer and between 22°C and 24°C during the winter months.

The island of Gran Canaria is served by one airport (Gran Canaria or Gando Airport) which is located on the island’s East Coast just 19km from the centre of Las Palmas. Regular flights, on various airlines, including low cost options, are available from most areas of the UK.

Car Hire is a popular way of exploring this island and is widely available.
