Sights & Sounds of Barbados

Posted in Travel Writing, Food and Drink, Barbados by Karen Platt on 23rd Dec 2018

With a reputation as a winter getaway for the rich and famous, Barbados is a coral island with wonderful white-sand beaches and, arguably, the most agreeable climate in the West Indies. Here’s a quick guide of what to see and do in Barbados.

1. CATAMARAN
Sail along Barbados’ beautiful coastline and enjoy the wonders of the Caribbean Sea on board a luxury catamaran cruise. Swim with the famous Barbados Sea Turtles or simply relax on deck with a rum punch before enjoying a sumptuous buffet lunch.

2. VISIT A PLANTATION HOUSE
Barbados is dotted with plantation houses that form a part of the island’s rich heritage. Steeped in history, a meander through the doors of these elegant properties provides a wonderful insight into a bygone era.

3. RUM!
Discovering rum landmarks on Barbados includes the Mount Gay Rum Visitors Centre, home to the world’s oldest rum, as well as the sugar plantation at St Nicholas Abbey, not forgetting to stop off at  one of the many rum shops on the island.

4. HARRISON’S CAVE
Explore one of the island’s most spectacular natural wonders deep beneath the earth’s surface where a guided tram takes visitors into the beautifully crystallized limestone caverns.

5. OISTINS FISH FRY
For an authentic Bajan experience, head to Oistins Fish Fry on a Friday or Saturday night and join locals and tourists who flock to this vibrant fish market to enjoy freshly caught seafood alongside authentic macaroni pie and Bajan jerk chicken.
